Our Story

As a snow Leopard conservationist and researcher, I have traveled to every remote corner of my hometown, Dolpo Himalayas. On every trip I have found local people- snow leopard conflict is a burning issue. I have seen snow leopard’s cubs being tortured and harmed during my master thesis research in 2016, on “The Impact of Caterpillar Fungus (Yartsagunbu) Collection on Snow Leopards.” It was disheartening.  At the same year, I had the opportunity to join renowned conservationist Dr. George Schaller, along with Alex Matthiessen (son of Peter Matthiessen who wrote the classic book, “The Snow Leopard”) to retrace the land of the snow leopard. I was deeply motivated and encouraged to work on community based conservation.

I didn’t know where or how to start, however Snow Leopard Journey (SLJ) was initiated. SLJ is a women-led green enterprise to conserve snow leopards with grass root herder/ local communities by creating local job opportunities.

Snow Leopard Journey allocates ten percent of the it’s trek profit for helping herder communities coexist with snow leopards and capaciting local youth as snow leopard guides/spotters.
